Channel Islands named top foodie destination in the Good Food Guide 2020
The Channel Islands have been firmly established as a top gastronomic destination in the 2020 edition of the Good Food Guide. Eleven restaurants from Jersey were featured in the list including Bohemia, Longueville Manor Restaurant, Tassili, Ocean Restaurant at The Atlantic Hotel, and Mark Jordan at the Beach.
Bohemia, led by Executive Chef Steve Smith, received the highest rating of all Channel Islands restaurants ranking 21st in the Guide’s Top 50 Restaurants in the UK list. The Guide wrote: “Sourcing primarily from Jersey's abundance, [Steve Smith’s] menus explore the possibilities of a recognisable modern European idiom, but with unsuspected intensities of flavour and curiosities of texture popping up throughout.” Achieving a score of eight, the quality of cooking at Bohemia is described as “highly individual with impressive artistry. There is little room for disappointment.”
The restaurants reviewed by the Good Food Guide are considered to be the best in the UK. More than 1,200 restaurants are scored between 1 and 10 by expert inspectors who “are equipped with extensive scoring guidelines to ensure that bench-marking around the UK is accurate”.
Also included the the Good Food Guide 2020 is Longueville Manor with an overall score of six. The Guide wrote: “The cooking remains as energetic and satisfying as ever, informed by an essentially modern French discipline and thoroughbred island produce….Local artisan cheeses are among the highlights of a double-decker trolley fashioned from vintage oak. Vegetarian and vegan menus aim for true inclusivity rather than lip service, and when it comes to wine, Longueville – and its fine sommeliers – have it nailed."
Tassili at Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa was awarded a score of five in the annual Guide. The Guide explained: “Professional service ensures a restful ambience in which to appreciate Nicolas Valmagna's modern Jersey cooking, which fuses French technique with outstanding island produce. Tasting menus include Land and Sea or Garden (vegetarian) themes, as well as the flagship version, and there is a small plates offering for the grazers.”
With great food and fabulous coastal locations, Ocean Restaurant at The Atlantic Hotel and Mark Jordan at the Beach featured in the Guide with scores of four and three respectively. Ocean Restaurant’s review described the hotel as a “proper island retreat” and praised the restaurant’s seafood with special mention of the “John Dory with lobster tagliatelle, tarragon purée and truffled lobster cream”.
Mark Jordan at the Beach’s seaside location is described as “well positioned to show the principal Channel Island off at its sparkling maritime best.” Seafood, again, received a special mention highlighting the restaurant’s "oysters in various liveries, mackerel escabèche, and pressed smoked salmon with guacamole, crab mayonnaise and a buttery sauce of sun-dried tomatoes and tarragon.“
