It's the time of year to get festive and if you're stocking up on Christmas wines, we've got some superb recommendations from Tassili at Grand Jersey's wine expert Shaun Corrigan, with everything from his favourite Christmas champagne to wine gifts for a connoisseur.

What to look for in a Christmas wine
Christmas fare is all about rich game, turkey, cheese and Christmas pudding, so match the mood with warming, indulgent wines. Celebrating is a good time to try special wines, so pull that old bottle you've been saving out of the cellar, or make a toast with a great bottle of champagne. Wine is there to be enjoyed after all.'

What would you recommend to accompany a Christmas dinner?
'Turkey and all the trimmings are less popular these days, and dishes like roast beef or goose are a more contemporary choice. With roast beef, I'd recommend a mature wine with plenty of depth, like Viña Tondonia, López de Heredia, Rioja or Columella, Sadie Family, Swartland. With goose, a mature medium-bodied red like a Granato, Foradori from Trentino would be an excellent choice.'

How about a wine to take to a dinner party?
'Instead of just a bottle of red, why not try a fortified wine like Vintage Verdelho, D'Olivera, Madeira which can make a great aperitif. Or perhaps a dessert wine, full of cinnamon and nutmeg spices like the Rare Muscat, Stanton & Killeen, Victoria.'

What's your favourite Christmas champagne?
'At the moment, it's the Blanc de Blancs 'Vénus', Brut Nature 2005 from Agrapart, Avize. This is a grand cru vineyard and the producer is a genius. Named after the donkey that plows the vineyard, this chardonnay has depth, notes of brioche and toasted almonds, with a steely and exceptional aftertaste of biscuits and fresh herbs, lasting at least ten minutes in the mouth.'

If you were buying wine for an expert...
'A good wine gift for a wine connoisseur would be my favourite red wine producer in Germany Jean Stodden's Spätburgunder Recher Herrenberg Grosses Gewächs. An amazing pinot noir from the northern Ahr Valley, Stodden produces a masterful, complex wine with incredible finesse and vibrancy.'

And don't forget the spirit of Christmas
'For me, this time of year is about giving thanks to the people you really care about. And indulgence of course, you can worry about that in January! All the team at Tassili wish you a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.'
