One to watch: Beach Polo
Look out for chukkas with a backdrop of crashing waves as the sport of kings arrives on the sands of St Brelade this September. Playing on sand is a new and hugely popular slant to the fast-paced sport, and the Jersey Beach Polo Tournament promises speed and excitement as St Brelade's Bay becomes the backdrop for an international line-up of polo players on Wednesday 19 September.
Four polo teams and thirty polo ponies will play a series of fast and furious chukkas on St Brelade's beach, with teams of three mallet-wielding players on horseback (instead of the traditional four), chasing a brightly coloured ball across the sand. The event's organiser Robert Jones of Jersey Pottery said: 'We're delighted to be organising the inaugural Jersey Beach Polo Tournament and also sponsoring Team Banjo. We hope that beach polo will feature in Jersey's sporting calendar for many years to come.' Singled out by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the top events of the autumn, Jersey's first beach polo tournament is going to be one event not to miss.
