Review
Sophisticated dining, stunning views, superb service and an
amazing dessert selection - has The Grill at L'Horizon got it all?
Luxury Jersey finds out.
There's something special about L'Horizon Hotel. Maybe it's the setting, just a few steps away from Jersey's beautiful beach, or the elegant light and airy décor, or perhaps it's the service - the calm, unruffled attention to detail that makes everything feel effortless.
The spot-on service is certainly something you'll notice at L'Horizon's sophisticated Grill Room with its two AA Rosettes. Serving up a fine dining menu in an intimate dining room, with windows overlooking the sea, it's hard to think of a better setting to enjoy Jersey's best seafood. Executive Chef James Whitesmith focuses on sourcing local ingredients to create a mouthwatering menu that's more Modern Jersey than Modern British.
A meal at The Grill comes with all the fine dining touches, homemade breads, amuse-bouches, and attention to detail from the efficient staff. The menu's a tasting delight of seasonal Jersey produce - scallops from Jersey's Bouley Bay, local crab and lobster, line-caught seabass, turbot, locally-grown shitake mushrooms, asparagus and Jersey Royals. Exquisite combinations of taste and composition - some of these dishes could win architectural awards - The Grill's menu is innovative and exciting. And, as you'd expect from a restaurant called The Grill, there's also a few excellent steak dishes.
Finish off your meal with a mouthwatering dessert choice, where soufflés and tarte tatins sit alongside clever chocolate creations, before the finishing touches - coffee and homemade petit fours.

Chef Interview
L'Horizon Hotel's Executive Chef James Whitesmith
James Whitesmith has been cheffing professionally for 18 years, working in internationally acclaimed restaurants like Vasco's at the Hilton Abu Dhabi and says the most amazing thing about Jersey is… 'the food! It's fantastic'.
Best time of the
day? The end of my shift when I can talk to guests
on the Grill terrace and get feedback. It's always vital to make
sure that things have gone well. Our aim is to make them
happy.
Favourite saying? 'Fail to prepare… prepare to
fail!'
Favourite flavour? I'm a savoury person, so it
would be spice.
Favourite food? Thai or Indian.
Favourite smell? Professionally baked
bread.
Favourite item of local produce?
Scallops.
Favourite cooking method? Pan work.
How do you unwind? Spending time with my
family.
Ultimate food and wine pairing? Duck and a good
red!
Favourite food memory? My first kitchen job,
watching a chef make bread. I was brought up on a diet of processed
foods, so finding out that you could actually make stuff like bread
was a revelation. Watching the bread rise, prove, be beaten down
and rise again - it was just astounding.
Favourite place in Jersey? St Ouen's.
Where do you go to eat when you're off duty?
Oyster Box, Castle Green or Bento Sushi.
Your 'end of the shift' snack? A cup of tea and a
sit down in the fresh air.
Which chef would you most like to share a kitchen
with? Jason Whitelock at Verre by Gordon Ramsay in
Dubai. Here on the island, it would have to be Mark Jordan
from The Atlantic Hotel and Mark Jordan at the Beach.
